How we do what we do So what is Kite aerial photography (KAP)? Most people I meet while flying my kite become quite fascinated and surprised when they realize there’s a camera hanging from my kite string. The little known hobby has been around since the early days of photography, but it’s in the digital age that the hobby has blossomed. There is a multitude of ways to operate the camera, I use radio controls to rotate and tilt my camera. I also use r/c to press a little arm which presses the cameras shutter button. I use wireless video to give a general idea where the camera is pointed. Thankfully, digital cameras make it economical to shoot hundreds of photos in hopes of getting a handful of good ones.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature doesn’t always present favorable winds, so I’ve branched out into Balloon Aerial Photography (BAP). I use a hybrid balloon/kite which allows me to shoot on beautiful days which before found me on the sidelines frustrated and praying for the slightest of breezes!
So what are the advantages over traditional aerial photography? It’s rather simple; I can put my camera anywhere I choose. This allows for close aboard, detailed photographs not distant, high altitude images. Another advantage cost savings. Flying a kite or small helium balloon is immensely cheaper than flying an airplane or helicopter. Not to mention its far safer and more environmentally friendly as well. I’ve been at this hobby for well over five years. I’ve also won awards for my work in fine art shows. Both of which has compelled me to make my skills commercially available. |
